Nearly million dong per durian exported to China during Tet

(HSV VIETNAM GROUP) - Each 5 kg Monthong durian is purchased by export businesses for nearly a million VND, equivalent to 178,000-185,000 VND per kg, an increase of 50% compared to the main season.

Having just sold her durian garden to traders near Tet, Ms. Oanh in Tien Giang said that for the first time she sold buckets (both large and small) of the whole garden for 140,000 VND per kg. "With more than 1 ton of off-season durian, I earned 140 million VND," Ms. Oanh said.

According to Ms. Thanh, a trader in the Western provinces, durian prices have increased continuously over the past week. During the day, morning, noon and afternoon have different buying prices. Especially with Monthong durian, no matter how many goods there are, she sells them all at high prices.

"Some days I can buy 1-2 tons, but other days I can't buy any tons because off-season goods are quite scarce. The number of traders buying has increased 2-3 times compared to last year," Ms. Thanh said.

Recorded at warehouses of Western enterprises, the price of Monthong type A durian (weight 2-5 kg) is 178,000-185,000 VND. At this level, each durian weighing 5 kg costs nearly one million VND, an increase of 23% compared to December 2023 and an increase of 50% compared to last year's main crop. Similarly, Ri 6 type A durian costs from 125,000-135,000 VND per kg.

A representative of Van Hoa Investment and Development Company said durian prices fluctuate continuously due to high demand in the Chinese market. Large orders but trickle of supply push prices up even more.

"In the past, traders brought goods to the warehouse to sell. Now, if the warehouse wants to fill the container with goods, they have to go to the garden to visit and buy, but there is not enough to meet the orders," said a representative of this business.

According to Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, durian is a popular fruit in China. In particular, the high demand for gifts during Tet in China makes them very popular. At this time, Thai durian is out of season, so Vietnamese goods are "alone in the market". Meanwhile, the supply of off-season goods is limited. Therefore, it is forecast that durian prices will continue to increase when supply is scarce.

Data from the General Department of Customs shows that in 2023, fruit and vegetable export turnover will increase mainly thanks to increased durian fruit exports. Overall, last year, exports of this fruit reached 2.1 billion USD, an increase of 1.82 billion USD compared to 2022. Of which, durian alone was exported to China with 2.03 billion USD, accounting for 99.4% of the total export value of this product group.

According to data from the General Administration of Customs of China, Vietnam's durian exports to this country have increased from nearly 0 to 4.63% market share, reaching 188 million USD in 2022 and skyrocketed to 31.82% in the first 11 months of last year.

Durian has become a luxury fruit favored by the Chinese middle class. They are also often bought as gifts for Tet, gifts for couples on engagement or marriage occasions, and future mothers-in-law.
