The coffee industry in Vietnam has gone through a long historical journey and is making great contributions to the country's socio-economic development. Currently, our country is the second largest coffee exporter in the world after Brazil and the leading coffee producer in Southeast Asia, with output mainly belonging to Robusta coffee.
The coffee industry is contributing 3% of the country's GDP, creating jobs and stable income for over 600 thousand farming households, contributing to socio-economic development, hunger eradication and poverty reduction in the Central Highlands and other coffee growing regions of Vietnam. For many years, Vietnam has always been the second largest coffee exporting country in the world and the world leader in Robusta coffee exports, with export turnover reaching over 3 billion USD/year (accounting for 17.4% in volume and 9.5% in value of world coffee exports).
Not only that, Vietnamese coffee is present in more than 80 countries and territories. The EU is Vietnam's largest coffee consuming market, accounting for 40% of the total volume and 38% of our country's total export turnover. Private enterprises embarked on coffee production and trading. Cooperation between farmers, businesses and the government has created international coffee brands. Typical examples include Trung Nguyen (1996) and Highlands Coffee (1998).
With the implementation of the EVFTA Agreement, the EU has eliminated taxes on all unroasted or roasted coffee products and processed coffee types, helping Vietnamese coffee increase its competitiveness in the EU market. Notably, the rate of processed coffee tends to increase from 5% in 2015 to 15% in 2020.
