In 2023, China spent more than 2 billion USD to buy more than 500,000 tons of durian from Vietnam, an increase of more than 11 times compared to the previous year.
2023 is a successful year for the Vietnamese durian industry. With an export output of more than 500,000 tons of durian to China, Vietnam is causing the durian market share of Thailand and Malaysia to shrink.
In the first two months of this year, Vietnamese durian was still "alone in the market" in China, especially during the Lunar New Year, the demand for gifts from the people of this country increased. Meanwhile, the supply of off-season goods is limited, so prices stand at sky-high levels.
Due to favorable exports, Vietnam's durian area also increased rapidly. Specifically, according to the Department of Crop Production (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), the total durian area in 2023 in our country is estimated at about 131,000 hectares, an increase of 20% compared to 2022. 51% of the durian area is for harvest, output will reach 1 million tons. Thus, within 1 year, the durian area of our country has increased significantly.
It is expected that the area planted with durian will increase in the next few years when the selling price is high and the profits earned by gardeners are large.
The Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association also commented that in about ten years, Vietnamese durian will not have to worry about market problems. The problem of the durian industry today is building a brand and increasing recognition in the international market.
China currently accounts for 99% of Vietnam's durian export market share, so it controls domestic durian prices during Tet. According to many gardeners, the price of durian near Tet this year is even higher than last year due to the Chinese market attracting goods.
According to the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, this is the off-season harvest time in some growing areas in the Mekong Delta and Central Highlands with limited quantities. Vietnam is currently the only supplier of fresh durian to China.
