Vietnamese steel industry: Strong and pioneering

(HSV VIETNAM GROUP) – From a small production base, the steel industry has steadily developed, overcoming the hardships of war to form large-scale, modern and self-contained complexes such as Formosa Ha Tinh, Hoa Phat Dung Quat and many factories spread across the country.

On November 29, 1963, the first batch of cast iron from Thai Nguyen Iron and Steel was released, marking a turning point in the history of Vietnam's metallurgical industry. From a small production base, Vietnam's steel industry has steadily developed, overcoming the hardships of war, to form large-scale, modern and self-contained complexes such as Formosa Ha Tinh, Hoa Phat Dung Quat... and many factories spread across the country.

Initially, steel mainly served domestic needs, then exported to more than 50 countries around the world. Up to now, Vietnam's steel industry has reached out to produce high-tech products, serving both high-speed railways and many key national projects: Nhat Tan bridge, Thu Thiem tunnel, Long Thanh airport, 500kV line, North-South expressway... These milestones confirm that Vietnam's steel industry is a solid "foundation" of the country's modern infrastructure.

Thai Nguyen Steel and Southern Steel are proud to have brought their steel bars to create major construction projects in the country.

In 2001, before the Vietnam Steel Association (VSA) was established, steel rolling output only reached about 2 million tons. By 2025, crude steel capacity will reach more than 30 million tons/year and more than 40 million tons/year of finished steel, with diverse types of steel. Vietnamese enterprises have mastered modern European technology lines, G7, producing high quality steel grades that meet international standards.

Not only stopping at quantity, Vietnam's steel industry has made strong progress in quality. Previously, steel products were mainly common construction steel, but now Vietnamese enterprises have mastered advanced technology, successfully producing high-quality steel to serve key national projects and high-tech fields.

Along with that is the continuous growth of private enterprises such as Hoa Phat, Hoa Sen, Ton Dong A...

On August 20, 2001, the Vietnam Steel Association (VSA) was officially born, marking an important milestone: Vietnam's steel industry has a unified professional organization, serving as a bridge to connect businesses, protect rights and promote common development.

The business community that is a member of the Vietnam Steel Association has continuously united and made efforts to build the country!

From 13 founding members - including big names such as VNSTEEL, TISCO, Hoa Phat, Southern Steel, Hoa Sen, Viet Thep, Ton Dong A, Viet Duc Steel... up to now, the Association has more than 120 members. This is not only a growth figure in quantity, but also a manifestation of the solidarity and gathering strength of a strong Vietnamese steel business community.

In the context of global climate change and Vietnam's Net Zero 2050 commitment, the steel industry - which is considered an industry that consumes a lot of energy and emits a lot of emissions - is facing the challenge of "going green". Fully aware of this, the Steel Association has soon implemented many action programs, encouraging members to invest in technological innovation, save energy and reduce emissions.

Besides production and business goals, the Vietnamese steel business community also strongly spreads the spirit of social responsibility.

Many member enterprises of the Vietnam Steel Association (VSA) have actively implemented social security activities, clearly demonstrating responsibility to the community. Vietnam Steel Corporation - VNSTEEL has built 200 gratitude houses with a total estimated support value of about 50 billion VND. Hoa Phat Group is the largest contributor, spending more than 110 billion VND for many programs such as building 1,500 houses to eliminate temporary housing, supporting localities to rebuild after Typhoon Yagi, building schools, giving Tet gifts, supporting orphans, sponsoring heart surgery, renovating cemeteries in Quang Tri...

Hoa Sen Group also left a bold mark with about 80 billion VND for humanitarian activities such as the program "Vietnamese Family Home", "Nursery of Good People" or typical cultural and artistic events, including Dalat Best Dance Crew. Ton Dong A focuses on practical work, close to the community such as building bridges - roads, schools, awarding scholarships to pupils - students in difficult circumstances, building charity houses, charity houses, accompanying officers - soldiers on the front lines of protecting the Fatherland, with a total value of support estimated at 8.5 billion VND...

Looking forward, Vietnam's steel industry still has much room for development.

From a young industry, Vietnam's steel industry has grown strongly, affirming its position on the world map. That journey would not have been possible without the companionship, engagement and guidance of the Vietnam Steel Association - where the strength of more than 120 members converges, working together to build a strong, pioneering community.
