Agriculture, forestry and fishery produce a record surplus

(HSV VIETNAM GROUP) – Total export turnover of agricultural, forestry and fishery products in 2023 reaches 53 billion USD. Trade surplus reached a record level of 12.1 billion USD, accounting for 42.5% of the country's trade surplus.

This information was announced by Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien at the press conference on work results in 2023 and tasks and solutions in 2024 of the agricultural sector, on the afternoon of December 29, 2023.

Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien emphasized that despite difficulties and challenges, the agricultural sector still has a record trade surplus

According to Mr. Tien, in the context of many difficulties and challenges, especially in the agricultural, forestry and fishery export market, the industry's overall added value (GDP) increased, estimated at 3.83%. This is the highest growth rate in the last 10 years.

Total agricultural, forestry and fishery export turnover is estimated at 53.01 billion USD, trade surplus reached a record level of 12.07 billion USD, up 43.07 over the same period last year, accounting for 42.5% of the country's trade surplus.

Some export items reached record highs such as vegetables reaching 5.69 billion USD, up 69% compared to 2022, rice reaching 4.78 billion USD, up 38% over the previous year.

In addition to vegetables and rice, last year, there were 4 other export items reaching over 3 billion USD: cashew nuts 3.63 billion USD (up 17.6%), coffee 4.18 billion USD (up 3.1%), shrimp 3.38 billion USD (down 21.7%), wood and wood products 13.37 billion USD (down 16.5%).

Mr. Nguyen Van Viet - Director of the Planning Department, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development - said that although the total export turnover target of agriculture, forestry and fishery products has not reached the target assigned by the Government, the industry has many products that have achieved outstanding miracles.

Typically, durian reached a record with 2.25 billion USD, an increase of more than 5 times compared to 2022. ST25 rice was recognized for the second time as the best rice in the world.

In addition, for the first time, the forestry sector completed procedures to successfully transfer 10.3 million tons of carbon emission reduction, earning 1,200 billion VND.

The process of harvesting and preserving durian is also given to improve the quality of durian

Mr. Nguyen Nhu Tiep - Director of the Department of Quality, Processing and Market Development of Agricultural Products - said that in 2023, the agricultural sector will have difficulty in terms of market due to war and conflict. However, the ministry has identified key markets and solutions.

Especially when the Chinese market reopened, the ministry had a series of conferences to promote and promote agricultural, forestry and fishery exports, so by 2023 exports to the Chinese market reached 12.3 billion USD.

Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien said the market structure is changing very quickly. If last year the US was the largest import market from Vietnam (about 25% market share), this year this market decreased. The Chinese market takes the throne, accounting for 22% of the export market share, while the US has 21%.

"Choose breakthrough solutions to orient production as well as open export markets. At the same time, apply good, safe and quality production processes.

Improve the ability to forecast, warn, and closely follow the real situation to proactively build scenarios and prepare for all possible situations" - Mr. Tien said about lessons learned in 2023.
