The global manufacturing revival will reshape the steel market

(HSV VIETNAM GROUP) – Recent increases in manufacturing activity signal a fundamental shift in industrial economics, potentially boosting steel demand as industrial activity expands.

The growing automotive and infrastructure sectors are key drivers of growing steel demand, fueled by technological advances and government investments.

The expansion of the manufacturing sector could lead to constraints in the global steel supply chain, forcing steelmakers to invest in expanding capacity and operational efficiency to meet growing demand.

Compared to last month, the index had very little change. Overall, the Construction MMI (Monthly Metals Index) was flat, down only 1.2%. Falling steel prices have put downward pressure on the index. However, several important factors continue to pressure construction activity from both a bearish and bullish perspective, including the Fed's delay in interest rate adjustments, weak domestic demand in China, and a growing manufacturing sector. With all these factors, the index will likely continue to move sideways, at least in the short term.

Potential production boom: Impact on steel prices

The recent increase in manufacturing activity is more than a temporary phenomenon. Currently, it represents a fundamental shift in industrial economics, with the potential to significantly impact steel demand. As industrial facilities increase production and operations, the demand for steel changes markedly.

The connection between the manufacturing sector and steel prices dates back to the Industrial Revolution. However, this relationship has taken on a new character in the context of today's hyper-connected global economic landscape. In most cases, it is still driven by technological advances, changing consumer preferences and the evolving geopolitical landscape. The revival of manufacturing activity in key markets, including China, the US and Europe, continues to act as an important catalyst in driving global steel demand.

Automobiles and infrastructure help drive steel demand

The main driver for the potential resurgence in manufacturing activity stems from rapid growth in sectors such as auto manufacturing and infrastructure development, both of which are likely to have a significant impact on steel prices. Notably, the automotive industry has once again emerged as a significant contributor to the growing steel demand. Likewise, the construction sector continues to experience an increase in activity, largely driven by government investments in infrastructure projects aimed at stimulating economic growth.

The role of the manufacturing industry in boosting steel prices

The manufacturing sector has a significant influence on the trajectory of steel prices. Industry analysts affiliated with the World Steel Association have noted recent double-digit increases in steel prices (followed by a period of stabilization and subsequent decline). Such price volatility creates opportunities for steelmakers to increase revenue, depending on the sustained strength of production demand.

Furthermore, production resilience could constrain the global steel supply chain, with some regions experiencing shortages and logistical hurdles. To cope with such situations, steel manufacturers often direct investments towards expanding capacity and improving operational efficiency to meet all the growing demands from the manufacturing sectors.
