NORTHERN WATERWAY TRANSPORTATION IS ENTERING A COMPREHENSIVE RESTRUCTURING PHASE TO BECOME A "BACKBONE" MODE OF TRANSPORTATION FOR LARGE VOLUME GOODS

(HSV VIETNAM GROUP) – Northern waterway transport is entering a comprehensive restructuring phase to become a "backbone" mode of transport for large volumes of goods. The focus is on reducing logistics costs, increasing the proportion of freight transport to 25-30% and modernizing the supply chain, below are the details:

1 - Strategic Orientation & Development Project

Strategic planning: Vietnam Maritime and Waterways Administration is promoting the Waterway Transport Development Project for the period 2026 - 2035, with a vision to 2050. The core goal is to shift transport from road to waterway, thereby reducing logistics costs for businesses by 30% to 40%.

Infrastructure modernization: Focus on upgrading at least 3,000 KM of important routes, completely resolving bottlenecks in bridge traffic and depth in the Red River Delta, and planning to integrate dry ports with the industrial park network.

2 - Key Transportation Routes

The North has 3 vital water transportation corridors, connecting from production centers to gateway port clusters:

Hai Phong - Hanoi Corridor: Along the Red River, Luoc River and Duong River systems, playing a key role in reducing the load on national highways.

Quang Ninh - Hai Phong - Viet Tri Corridor (Phu Tho): An important cargo and container transport route connecting the northern midland and mountainous provinces with seaports.

Quang Ninh - Ninh Binh Corridor: Strategic route serving the transportation of construction materials, bulk goods and oversized and super heavy goods.

3 - Update Infrastructure Highlights

Nghia Hung Canal (Ninh Binh): The canal and lock complex connecting the Day River and Ninh Co River are operated automatically. This project shortens the travel time of ships from Ninh Co River to Day River from 8 hours to only 20 - 30 minutes, opening up great opportunities for Ninh Binh port cluster and reducing freight charges.

Tan Cang - Que Vo dry port (Bac Ninh): Is a strategic inland waterway port that plays the role of customs clearance and transporting containers by barge on the Cam River - Kinh Thay River - Duong River route. This allows businesses in industrial parks in Bac Ninh and Bac Giang to carry out customs procedures right locally, helping to shorten delivery time.

4 - Logistics advantages and road load reduction:

Bidding packages and services for transporting coal by inland waterways in the North are still active to meet production needs, with a focus on coal transshipment from Quang Ninh mining areas (such as Hon Gai, Cam Pha, Mao Khe) to thermal power plants and delta provinces (such as Hai Duong, Thai Binh, Nam Dinh).
