VIETNAM RANKS 10TH IN THE WORLD IN CRUDE STEEL PRODUCTION

(HSV VIETNAM GROUP) – This is an important milestone when Vietnam surpasses a number of countries for the first time to join the group of 10 largest crude steel producing countries in the world, after steel producing powers such as China, India, the United States, Japan, Korea, Russia, Türkiye, Germany and Brazil.

In the first 4 months of 2026, Vietnam reached an official crude steel output of 9.7 million tons according to aggregated data from the Vietnam Steel Association (VSA), ranking 10th in the world in crude steel production, nearly equal to Brazil ranked 9th (10.8 million tons) according to WSA aggregated data at the end of May 2026. It can be seen that high crude steel production growth not only reflects the strong expansion of production scale, but also shows that Vietnam's steel industry is moving towards synchronous, modern closed investment, from upstream to downstream production, and the increasing autonomy of Vietnam's steel industry in the global industrial supply chain. However, it is also seen that due to the recent conflict in Iran (the crude steel producing country ranked 10th, with 31.8 million tons in 2025), the total output in the first 4 months of the year does not truly reflect the country's ranking.

Previously, in 2024 - 2025, Vietnam recorded crude steel output of about 24.6 million tons, an increase of 12.3% compared to the previous year. Vietnam maintains the leading position in Southeast Asia and ranks 11th in the world for 2 consecutive years 2024-2025 in crude steel production.

According to statistics from the Vietnam Steel Association, by the end of the first 4 months of 2026:

Crude steel production reaches ~9.7 tons, up 23.5% over the same period in 2025.

Crude steel consumption reaches ~9.2 tons, up 18.7% over the same period in 2025. Of which, crude steel exports reach more than 1 million tons, down 2.4% over the same period in 2025.

Domestic billet price increased by 100-200 VND/Kg, maintaining the level of 13,550 VND/Kg to 13,950 VND/kg at the end of April and early May 2026. The price of embryos traded at Southeast Asian ports on May 15, 2026 is ~ 505 USD/ton, an increase of 15 USD compared to the transaction price in early April 2026.
