(HSV VIETNAM GROUP) – There have been 12 Vietnamese fruit and vegetable products officially exported to China. The next items that can be named are fresh coconut, frozen durian,...
In 5 months, agricultural, forestry and fishery exports to the Chinese market increased by 8.6%
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, in 2023, trade turnover of agricultural, forestry and fishery products between the two countries will reach 15.53 billion USD; Of which, exports reach 12.1 billion USD (up 16.4% compared to 2022) and imports reach 3.4 billion USD (down 9.7% compared to 2022).
In the first 5 months of 2024, the import-export turnover of agriculture, forestry and fisheries between the two countries reached 6.2 billion USD (up 2.9% over the same period in 2023). Of which, Vietnam's exports to the Chinese market are estimated to reach 4.6 billion USD (up 8.6% over the same period in 2023), imports are estimated at 1.6 USD (up 31.5% over the same period in 2023).
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said that up to now, the two Parties have signed 21 Memorandums of Understanding/Protocols on export and import of agricultural, forestry and fishery products between the two countries, demonstrating the close cooperation and efforts of the two Parties.
Currently, many Vietnamese agricultural, forestry and fishery products are exported to China. Among them, there are 12 fruit and vegetable items including: Watermelon, mangosteen, black jelly, durian, fresh banana, sweet potato, dragon fruit, rambutan, mango, lychee, longan, jackfruit; bird's nest, fish meal and a number of products serving the production and processing of animal feed; Dairy and seafood products of all kinds.
Notably, fresh coconuts, frozen durian, crocodiles, poultry... are a long list that can be officially exported to the Chinese market in the near future. Vietnamese agricultural products have more opportunities to earn billions of dollars from this market.
Mr. Hoang Trung - Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development - said that in the near future, the two sides will soon complete procedures to sign the Protocol on plant quarantine requirements for fresh coconuts and frozen durians from Vietnam exported to China. For passion fruit and chili products that have been pilot exported by the two Parties, the two Parties will promote the completion of procedures to soon be able to sign these two documents.
In addition, the two sides will coordinate to complete the Protocol on exporting crocodiles, raw bird's nests, poultry and exploited aquatic products from Vietnam to China. The Chinese side will assign technical agencies to review and soon process agricultural and fishery export registration dossiers of Vietnamese enterprises to China to create favorable conditions for trade cooperation in agricultural, forestry and fishery products.
It can be seen that agricultural products exported to the Chinese market are increasing strongly and are one of Vietnam's main export markets. Besides the involvement of authorities in opening the market, businesses also do not miss the opportunity to exploit this billion-people market.
For example, for durian products, according to the Department of Import and Export (Ministry of Industry and Trade), Vietnam is the second largest market supplying fresh durian to China. Notably, China sharply increased imports of fresh durian from the Vietnamese market in the first 4 months of 2024, reaching 79.3 thousand tons, worth 369.8 million USD, an increase of 91.% in volume and an increase of 81.9% in value compared to the same period in 2023; accounting for 39.2% of China's total fresh durian imports, an increase of 25.9 percentage points over the same period in 2023.
Vietnamese durian is considered to have the advantage of abundant output, being harvested all year round, especially when in season, not competing with Thai durian. In addition, an advantage of Vietnamese durian when exporting to the Chinese market is fast shipping time and competitive price.
Businesses seize opportunities and expand markets
As an enterprise exporting durian to this market, Ms. Doan Thuy Giang, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Vinh Khang Group Joint Stock Company, is also looking forward to the opportunity from frozen durian to be exported to China. Currently, the enterprise is ready to prepare the conditions to be able to participate in exporting this product.
Also according to Ms. Doan Thuy Giang, this enterprise will participate in exporting durian to the Chinese market from 2022. Since signing the Protocol, Vietnamese durian exports to China have increased sharply. During the year, Vietnam has many durian harvests. Each season, the enterprise exports more than 60 containers, each containing about 18 tons of fresh durian. Vietnam's durian price is more competitive than Thailand's, so it is attractive to Chinese importers.
Regarding coconut products, Mr. Pham Thanh Danh - General Director of Datafa Co., Ltd. - shared that last year the company participated in a fair in China and found a partner. Accordingly, on average each month the company sells four containers of coconut water products to the Chinese market. For products to reach the Chinese market is quality and price. In addition, when goods enter China, the product's HS Code will change some details, and the situation will improve for the first few containers of goods going through customs services.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Binh - Chairman of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association - assessed that the demand for processed durian in China tends to increase due to high durian prices and few people can afford to buy whole fruits, while the price of processed durian is more affordable and more suitable to the tastes of young people. This may be a new market trend that we need to pay attention to.
However, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Binh noted the need to promote management, inspection, supervision and handling of violations related to product quality. At the same time, more attractive incentive mechanisms and policies are needed for the processing industry to both diversify exported fruit products and contribute to reducing the export proportion of fresh and raw products, especially reducing pressure on product consumption during the season.
Ms. Vu Kim Hanh - President of the High Quality Vietnamese Goods Business Association said that businesses should never think that China is an easy-going market. This time is when we reposition our products. Of course there are products in the popular segment, but once they enter the Chinese market, they must consider long-term survival and development.
In 2024, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable industry expects export turnover to reach a new record, about 6.5 billion USD. It is forecast that the export market will continue to be favorable in the second half of the year, especially when many key agricultural products of Vietnam are forecast to continue to be opened in the Chinese market. Along with localities, businesses need to ensure quality supply and increase fruit and vegetable processing for export. At the same time, promoting trade promotion and expanding markets, this industry is expected to achieve the set growth target.
